Various medieval texts show the four main meanings of her tears: tears of repentance, mercy, grief and love. The medieval prayer Ghent, University Library, 209, fol. 245v-247r reveals how Mary Magdalen’s tears are used as an example for the common man to follow. Like this, weeping over one’s sins is an important step in the process of absolution. After all, sincerely shed tears of repentance do have the power of washing away one’s sins. Special attention is given to the notable phrase ‘met eender fonteynen der tranen’ from the Ghent prayer. |
