Document Details : Title: Adam and Eve Subtitle: Man and Woman as a Couple in the Pictorial Art Author(s): Journal: Marriage, Families & Spirituality Volume: 6 Issue: 1 Date: Spring 2000 Pages: 120-123 DOI: 10.2143/INT.6.1.2004611 Abstract : The Biblical story of the creation of the first human couple “in God’s image, as man and woman” has deeply marked both our understanding of man and woman and the relationship between them down the centuries. In the history of the art of the Christian West Adam and Eve are the first couple that appear as deserving of pictorial representation. As early as the 3rdcentury we find representations of the creation of the progenitors of our race and of the Fall, though it was not until the Middle Ages that they became a favored motif in all kinds of art. |
