The Holy Sepulchre is surrounded by other monuments, adorned with religious scenes believed to be historical. On this basically Western cartographical view, the places of pilgrimage are often embellished with vignettes, cartouches, or clipei, containing bust-portraits of Christ, the Virgin Mary and Child, as well as other relevant holy persons or scenes from their lives, borrowed from Greek Orthodox religious prints, such as those illustrating the Akathistos Hymn. |
