Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 118 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2005 Pages: 219-240 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.118.3.2004461 Abstract : The article presents and evaluates new evidence on the Arabic versions of the Corpus Dionysiacum. It shows that the entire corpus exists in Arabic translation in at least two parallel manuscripts (Sinai MSS ar. 268 and 314) and that there are other translations, different from the complete one, of some parts of the corpus (CH, chs. 1-9; DN, ch. 4, §§18-35; Ep. 8). An analysis of the three colophons of Sinai MS ar. 268 shows that the complete translation of the corpus was commissioned by the Jacobite physician Ibn al-Yabrūdī and produced directly from the Greek original by Ibn Saḥqūq in Damascus in Ṣafar 400 (September-October, 1009). At the end of the article a provisional inventory of the Arabic versions of the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus is given. |
