No official agreements previously existed in regard to Orthodox Christians marrying a Protestant. Only in December 2002 have the Council of the Protestant Church (EKD) and the Commission of the Orthodox Churches in Germany (KOKiD) reached an agreement in which they assess the Christian understanding of marriage, suggest a shared marriage celebration, and encourage the spouses to actively participate in the life of their respective communities. Reinhard Thöle, staff member of the Konfessionskundliches Institut Bensheim of the EKD, highlights the ecumenical impact of these common pastoral directives. |
