What I mean can be illustrated by the following anecdote, from Henri Nouwen’s Clowning in Rome (New York: Doubleday, 1979). The story tells of a little boy who was watching a sculptor hard at work with his hammer and chisel on a large block of marble. He grew tired of the slow work and left the shop. After a while the boy returned to find to his great surprise a large, powerful lion in the place where the marble block had stood. With excitement, he ran to the sculptor, saying, “Sir, tell me, how did you know that there was a lion in that marble?” |
