Document Details : Title: About Sumerian Personal Names Author(s): BALKE, Thomas E. Journal: Onoma Volume: 32 Date: 1994-1995 Pages: 71-82 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.32.0.2003512 Abstract : To date, the Sumerian onomasticon has been taken into account, either within general religious studies or in works confined to certain stages of Sumerian. Current Sumerological scholarship generally neglects Onomastics, for two reasons: first, due to the absence of a coherent context, the interpretation of personal names is often open to considerable doubt, and second because the customs and practices associated with Sumerian name-giving are still largely unknown, leaving aside the problems of Sumerian grammar. In spite of these problems, insights into Sumerian naming are still possible. |
