Document Details : Title: The Polish Surname as a Carrier of Moral Values and as an Ethnic Heritage Author(s): KALETA, Zofia Journal: Onoma Volume: 34 Date: 1998-1999 Pages: 101-118 DOI: 10.2143/ONO.34.0.2003443 Abstract : The paper aims to show that surnames became a cultural value for Poles from the 15th century on, as important as dignity, honour and good reputation. This is extensively documented by quotes from historical and contemporary dictionaries and by a questionnaire. Also shown in this paper are the changes undergone by Polish Americans in their relationship to American society, as reflected by changes in surnames which indicated the ethnic and cultural background of their holders. |
