Document Details : Title: Byzantine Maritime Trade with The East (4th - 7th centuries) Author(s): MUNDELL MANGO, Marlia Journal: ARAM Periodical Volume: 8 Issue: 1 Date: 1996 Pages: 139-163 DOI: 10.2143/ARAM.8.1.2002190 Abstract : The following paper will re-examine the evidence for the continuation of Roman trade with the East into the Byzantine period, ie after AD 300. Essentially, it will focus attention on the movement of Byzantine goods eastward from the Empire, and of oriental goods westward into the Empire, irrespective of the identities of their carriers or middlemen – Auxumites, Himyarites, Persians: many being Nestorian Christians. Recent archaeological work or study of material at Alexandria, in the Red Sea area, the Yemen, Sri Lanka, at Merv and Begram, in Russia's Kama Valley and in China provides new evidence to consider. |
