Spasinou Charax, both as a city and as a state had several names: (1) Charax is a Greek distortion of an Aramaic original, karkā, ‘surround’ or ‘fortified city’. (2) Characene is the political name of the kingdom of Charax. (3) Spasinou Charax (Σπασινου Χάρακ) is the Greek form of the Aramaic name. It means ‘the fortress (or city) of Hyspaosines’, who refounded the city and was its first independent ruler. (4) Karkā de Maysān (the fortress of Maysān). (5) Mesene (Μεσήνην) is the Greek form of Maysān, and Maysān is the Arabic form of the name. |
