This paper surveys its appearance in Jewish liturgy. In pre-modern liturgy, this cluster of themes is all pervasive, grounded in biblical authority. However, the modern Reform Movement rejected its premises as inconsistent with Jews’ integration into western society and wrote it out of their liturgies. This modified after the Holocaust and the birth of the State of Israel; contemporary Reform liturgy reincorporated a relationship with the Land and Jewish nationhood but still excluded hopes for a reinstituted sacrificial liturgy in the Jerusalem Temple. |
