Positioned at the intersection of cultural history, art theory, and cultural diplomacy, the study adopts a transversal approach informed by the author’s dual formation as an artist and former diplomat, combining interpretative sensitivity with academic rigor. The analysis focuses on correspondence relating to Clara Haskil, bringing to the fore both historical figures – sovereigns, artists, and cultural mediators – and valuable documents from the Belgian Royal Archives. The letters are interpreted as expressions of cultural responsibility and recognition of artistic value, highlighting the role of epistolary gestures, patronage, and personal networks in shaping informal yet decisive forms of cultural mediation in interwar Europe. The article argues that cultural diplomacy unfolds as a long-term process grounded in care, discernment, and continuity. Het artikel biedt een originele kijk op culturele diplomatie, die niet louter wordt gezien als een institutioneel instrument, maar als een relationele, ethische en esthetische praktijk die in staat is om continuïteit, betekenis en cultureel geheugen te genereren buiten de formele politieke kaders. Het onderzoek bevindt zich op het raakvlak van cultuurgeschiedenis, kunsttheorie en culturele diplomatie en hanteert een transversale benadering die is gebaseerd op de dubbele achtergrond van de auteur als kunstenaar en voormalig diplomaat, waarbij interpretatieve gevoeligheid wordt gecombineerd met academische nauwkeurigheid. De analyse richt zich op briefwisseling met betrekking tot Clara Haskil, waarbij zowel historische figuren – vorsten, kunstenaars en culturele bemiddelaars – als waardevolle documenten uit het Belgisch koninklijk archief naar voren worden gebracht. De brieven worden geïnterpreteerd als uitingen van culturele verantwoordelijkheid en erkenning van artistieke waarde, waarbij de rol van briefwisseling, mecenaat en persoonlijke netwerken bij het vormgeven van informele maar beslissende vormen van culturele bemiddeling in het interbellum in Europa wordt benadrukt. Het artikel stelt dat culturele diplomatie zich ontvouwt als een langdurig proces dat gebaseerd is op zorg, onderscheidingsvermogen en continuïteit. Cet article propose une lecture originale de la diplomatie culturelle, comprise non seulement comme un instrument institutionnel, mais aussi comme une pratique relationnelle, éthique et esthétique capable de générer une continuité, un sens et une mémoire culturelle au-delà des cadres politiques formels. Située à la croisée de l’histoire culturelle, de la théorie de l’art et de la diplomatie culturelle, cette étude adopte une approche transversale qui s’appuie sur la double formation de l’auteur, à la fois artiste et ancienne diplomate, alliant sensibilité interprétative et rigueur académique. L’analyse se concentre sur la correspondance relative à Clara Haskil, mettant en avant à la fois des personnages historiques – souverains, artistes et médiateurs culturels – et des documents précieux provenant des archives royales belges. Les lettres sont interprétées comme des expressions de responsabilité culturelle et de reconnaissance de la valeur artistique, soulignant le rôle des gestes épistolaires, du mécénat et des réseaux personnels dans la formation de formes informelles mais décisives de médiation culturelle dans l’Europe de l’entre-deux-guerres. L’article soutient que la diplomatie culturelle se déroule comme un processus à long terme fondé sur l’attention, le discernement et la continuité. |
