Document Details : Title: The Illustration of the Gospel Book Vind. theol. gr. 154 Author(s): ANDERSON, Jeffrey C. Journal: Orientalia Christiana Periodica Volume: 90 Issue: 2 Date: 2024 Pages: 305-315 DOI: 10.2143/OCP.90.2.3294449 Abstract : The late eleventh-century Gospel book Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek, theol. gr. 154 is one of a handful of examples with marginal or interlinear illustration. Through a consideration of the locations of the miniatures in the Gospels, as well as of their simple, unadorned compositions, the author argues that the choice of subjects and passages is one based on a Gospel lectionary. The choice, he speculates, was not intended to remind the reader of the service book, but to simply present him a group of representative and significant subjects with which the illuminator was familiar. |
