The author underlines the necessity of carrying out the voice of the unheard through the mediation of writing, staging a character who is haunted in anticipation by the horrors of the Holocaust, making anachronism a meaningful trope in the narrative. This short story can be construed as a parable on the mediation of suffering and a reflection on the duties of American writers towards the survivors of the Holocaust. 'The German Refugee' a pour narrateur un Juif américain assimilé aux prises avec la souffrance d’un réfugié. Il fait face à son incapacité à s’adapter après avoir fui l’Allemagne nazie. L’auteur souligne la nécessité de donner une voix à ceux qui n’ont pas été entendus par la médiation de l’écriture en mettant en scène un personnage que la Shoah hante par anticipation, faisant de l’anachronisme un trait stylistique essentiel du récit. Cette nouvelle peut être interprétée comme une parabole sur la médiation de la souffrance et une réflexion sur la responsabilité des auteurs américains envers les rescapés de la Shoah. |
