Document Details : Title: Housing in a Roman Provincial Capital Subtitle: The Case of Narbo Author(s): DARDENAY, Alexandra Journal: BABESCH Volume: 100 Date: 2025 Pages: 121-146 DOI: 10.2143/BAB.100.0.3294525 Abstract : This article provides an overview of the housing and décor in the Roman city of Narbo, which was the first Roman colony outside Italy (118 BC) and became the capital of the province of Transalpine Gaul and then Gallia Narbonensis. This city was a major administrative, political and religious centre, yet little is known about its Roman remains. This contribution aims to address this lacuna by offering an analysis of the housing at Narbo, drawing upon the archaeological excavations of recent decades. The article presents domestic architecture and its changes, as well as the evolution of ornamental decoration (painting, mosaics, opus sectile). It also analyses the organisation of living space, seeking to provide a more nuanced understanding of the ‘ways of living’ in a major provincial capital. |
