Abstract :
The article analyses the asymmetrical relationship between Pelagius and Augustine by first reconstructing their correspondence and then focussing on the ancient concept of 'friendship' (amicitia): Augustine constructed Pelagius first as a friend, then as a heretic. Pelagius constructed Augustine as a friend before breaking off contact. Augustine used the concept of friendship in order to create space for a possible conversion of Pelagius. Pelagius wanted to claim Augustine as member of a network of 'friends'. The strategies of both Augustine and Pelagius failed: Neither could Augustine convert Pelagius, nor could Pelagius profit from being friend of the friends of Augustine. The ancient concept of 'friendship' was inadequate to deal with the conflicts created by the new discourse about heresy and orthodoxy.
