Document Details : Title: La división en actos en las comedias de Terencio Subtitle: Transmisión manuscrita y comentarística medieval Author(s): RUIZ ARZALLUZ, Iñigo Journal: Latomus Volume: 84 Issue: 2 Date: 2025 Pages: 341-361 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.84.2.3294650 Abstract : Contrary to what is frequently stated, act-division has a notable presence in the manuscript transmission of Terence’s comedies, although it always comes from commentaries, first ancient and then medieval. In the present paper, we make a systematic analysis of the indications found in this regard in the mss. and we also highlight the decisive role that the so-called commentarii recentiores (a group of little known commentaries from the 12th-13th century) have had in defining the limits of the acts. Finally, the fortune of both models (Donatus’s and the medieval one) in the subsequent history of Terence’s text up to the present day is also addressed. |
