Abstract :

This paper offers a synchronic and diachronic analysis of the colloquial Tehrani Persian kuš- ‘be where?’, inåhåš- ‘be here’ and unåhåš- ‘be there’. I posit that these three forms are verb stems and that they are derived from the forms ku ‘where is?’, inåhå ‘here is’ and unåhå ‘there is’ followed by the third-person singular clitic pronoun, which serves as an ending: ku-š ‘where is s/he?’, inåhå-š ‘here s/he is’, and unåhå-š ‘there s/he is’. This is a phenomenon known as 'Watkins’ Law'. The latter involves the reanalysis of a third-person singular inflected form as an unmarked third-person singular form, from which a new paradigm emerges.
