The aim of this article is to determine the origin of the articles in Albanian, namely the postpositive definite article (kalem-i ‘the pencil’) and the connective article, which introduces attributive elements (kalem-i i mirë ‘the good pencil’, kalem-i i mësuesit ‘the teacher’s pencil’). While the creation of a postpositive definite article poses no problem and, in this case, can be analyzed as a primary Balkan feature, the creation of a connective article is more difficult to justify in historical terms. We present here a new hypothesis on the origin of the connective article in Albanian, deriving it not from a special use of the definite article (on the model of the polydefinite structures of Greek), but from a demonstrative weakened by apheresis (parallel to a structure attested in Romanian). This new hypothesis enables us to understand how the Albanian language created a complex system of articles and gave it the regularity it now possesses in the language. |
