Abstract :
In the present paper, I investigate the position of Albanian within the so-called 'Balkan Indo-European' – namely, a subgroup among the Indo-European daughter languages, which is traditionally argued to include Albanian, Greek (more specifically, Greco-Phrygian), and Armenian. I discuss twenty-four isoglosses between Albanian and at least one other 'Balkan Indo-European' language, focusing specifically on morphology and semantics. The result of the investigation is that the number of morphological and semantic isoglosses between Albanian and Greek (sixteen) is considerably higher than the number of morphological and semantic isoglosses between Albanian and Armenian (four). This strongly suggests that, if the concept of 'Balkan Indo-European' can be maintained, Albanian and Greek should be viewed as more closely associated with each other within this Indo-European subgroup.
