Abstract :
Looking back on several decades as a tertiary educator and researcher, this inaugural lecture examines varying approaches to the study of Islam as a field of scholarly inquiry. Using Russell McCutcheon’s taxonomy for different types of scholars of religion, distinguishing between theologians, phenomenologists and critics not caretakers, the focus is on crosspollinations between academic fields and disciplines and how this is reflected in the work of Muslim intellectuals qua academic scholars of Islam.
