Abstract :
Good education requires good teachers, an insight that proves especially relevant in the field of religious education (RE). However, opinions on what constitutes a good RE teacher vary widely and evolve over time, always shaped by the changing contexts in which they live and work. Traditionally seen as catechists tasked with conveying Church doctrine, Catholic RE teachers in Flanders (Belgium) now work within a context marked by detraditionalisation, pluralisation, and individualisation. This shift is embodied in the hermeneutical-communicative model of RE, which defines the teacher’s role as that of a specialist, moderator, and witness. While this model has gained broad acceptance in Flanders, today’s classroom context invites renewed reflection on what these roles mean in practice. This article traces the historical development of the RE teacher’s role and explores how it has evolved in response to broader cultural and educational shifts. It then examines how contemporary challenges – such as the increasing religious illiteracy and resurgence of knowledge in education, the demands of a 'super-diverse' society, and the tension between professionalism and personal disclosure – require teachers to recontextualise their roles as specialists, moderators, and witnesses. Meeting these demands calls for an integration of content and pedagogical knowledge, dialogical skill, and authentic self-disclosure. Yet realising this vision requires sustained investment in teacher formation, increasingly challenged by the shortage of qualified RE teachers. Grounded in both theory and practice, this article contributes to ongoing conversations about the future of Catholic RE and the formation of well-equipped RE teachers in an increasingly complex educational landscape.
