Abstract :
Despite his holy life and his fame as a spiritual author, Thomas a Kempis was never canonized and his dies natalis was never officially recorded. Traditionally, he is believed to have died in 1471 on 25 July, the feast of the apostle James. However, it has recently been argued that he died that year on 1 May, the feast of the apostles Philip and James. This paper refutes the arguments for 1 May and confirms the traditional date of death, 25 July. The argument presented here is not merely intended to be a falsification, but also to demonstrate the usefulness of heortology as an auxiliary historical science.
