While this has provided many benefits for theological reflection on the religious life, it has also contributed to an underutilization of the eucharist as a paradigm for interpreting the meaning and nature of religious life. This article explores how the rites of religious initiation incorporate a highly eucharistic sense for understanding the religious life, and so seeks to demonstrate the importance of introducing such a paradigm for theologians and religious alike. Considering the rubrics, euchology, and lectionary for these liturgies provides a strong basis for contextualizing the religious life as a primarily paschal form of life that cannot be reduced to baptism; rather, it expresses the incorporation into the religious life as drawing upon and contributing to a progressively stronger eucharistic imagination. Strengthening the eucharistic basis for the religious life does not dismiss the importance of baptism, but brings it toward greater fulfillment. La priorité accordée au paradigme baptismal a fortement influencé la manière dont la théologie de la vie consacrée s’est développée depuis le Concile Vatican II. Bien que cela ait apporté de nombreux avantages à la réflexion théologique sur la vie religieuse, cela a également contribué à une sous-utilisation de l’eucharistie en tant que paradigme pour interpréter le sens et la nature de la vie religieuse.
