Abstract :
This study is dedicated to the so-called Synod of Vienna, held in 1773. In reality, it was a meeting of the Uniate bishops of the Hungarian Kingdom, who were invited by Empress Maria Theresa to discuss liturgical questions. Michal Lacko, the scholar who edited the documents related to this event, stated that the synod 'was, without exaggeration, the foundation of ecclesiastical and public life for Greek Catholics in the Hungarian Kingdom until its dissolution'. In this research, we focus on the decisions of a liturgical nature, examining the sources primarily from the perspective of the Eparchy of Mukachevo. We address three questions: 1) Whether it is possible to speak of a unified liturgical tradition in this eparchy before the Synod of Vienna, 2) Whether the Synod played an important role in the transmission of this tradition, if it existed, and 3) Whether the Synod contributed to the later development of this liturgical tradition. We must remark that, although the bishops' convocation was motivated in part by liturgical discussions, it did not achieve any specific goals in this field. The participants held differing views on the liturgy. The prelates of Mukachevo defended a conservative position against the Serbian and Romanian members of the synod. The major project — the edition of common liturgical books — failed, possibly due to the mistrust that accompanied the sessions. If the synod had any influence on the liturgy, it is more evident in the mentality of the Mukachevo clergy, who became more rooted in a certain liturgical conservatism.
