After presenting the methodological framework, which relies on the Brepols Library of Latin Texts database, the study shows that the notion of syllepsis was understood in two radically different ways: in literary and rhetorical commentaries it was generally treated as a deliberate figure of speech or stylistic device, whereas in grammatical and artigraphic treatises it was frequently stigmatised as a linguistic irregularity (soloecismus). The article is structured in three parts. The first part traces the earliest attestations of the phenomenon, describes the associated linguistic features, and analyses the terminological evolution of the concept of syllepsis itself. The second part offers a systematic examination of the grammatical examples provided by Latin authors and commentators. The third part investigates the axiological judgements of Latin grammarians from three complementary perspectives: sociolinguistic (social acceptability of the construction), pragmatic (its rhetorical effects and contextual appropriateness), and speculative (its implications for broader theories of language and congruence). La présente contribution se propose de voir comment la syllepse de nombre (syllepsis per numeros) a été traitée dans le corpus artigraphique latin, sur une fourchette chronologique s’étendant du IIe au XVe siècle. Après un bref exposé sur les choix méthodologiques qui ont présidé à l’étude (à partir de la base de données de la Library of Latin Texts de Brepols), nous faisons le constat que la syllepse a pu être diversement appréhendée: conçue tantôt comme une figura ou figure de rhétorique dans les commentaires littéraires, tantôt comme une faute de langue prenant place dans le paragraphe sur le solécisme dans le discours artigraphique. L’étude se subdivise en trois parties: nous commençons par analyser les enjeux linguistiques tels qu’ils se déduisent des premières occurrences des termes dénotant les phénomènes sylleptiques. Nous poursuivons en considérant les exemples associés à ces termes et décrivons les phénomènes linguistiques sous-jacents. Enfin, dans la troisième partie, nous mettons au jour l’approche axiologique de certains grammairiens latins et la concevons dans une triple perspective: sociolinguistique, pragmatique et spéculative. |
