Abstract :
In the Indic cultural tradition, there are sūtras and not dogmas in the sense in which they are understood in contemporary Christian theology. The difference needs to be noted and its implication acknowledged before launching into the discussion proper. For, we may have to abandon the route that led to the formulation of Christological dogmas, and instead, trace an alternative path for encountering, understanding and expressing the mystery of redemption with our eyes on Calvary where, in a historically recorded set of political circumstances, sub Pontio Pilato, Jesus revealed himself as the Christ, the Messiah, the Liberator in the context of a social conflict, a public confrontation between the world he dreamt of and the one we have constructed. The notion of dogma in vogue today hinders us from making this crucial change of emphasis in the manner of doing Christology.
