Abstract :

During the Middle Ages, the Jewish communities in Egypt established an autonomous communal authority known as the Negidut or, in the Arabic texts, as Ri’asat al-Yahud. The process of its establishment at the beginning of the Fatimid period of Egyptian history was described in great detail by the 17th-century historian Joseph Sambari in his chronicle Sefer Divrey Yosef (SDY). While certain aspects of the history of the Negidut have been investigated in the literature during recent decades, no exhaustive analysis of its genesis, as depicted in the SDY, has yet been published. The present article surveys the sources used by Sambari and investigates their historical validity. Also analyzed is the author’s method of weaving his source material together into an integrated, coherent literary composition. Finally, the question as to the intent behind the composition of this story is addressed and a possible answer proposed, assigning the story to the genre of «religious foundation stories».
