We all know what irony is. That is to say, we are familiar with the phenomenon, we know how to deal with ironic utterances as a hearer, we presumably know how to perform them as speakers, and we know more or less when to apply the term and label an utterance as ironic. After all, we are supposed to live in an ironic age — whatever that might mean.
