Abstract :

Pastoral care (Diakonie), the care for and service to actual people is a criterion of the truthfulness of the church. Only when they feel that they themselves are being taken seriously can they experience the church community, its preaching and its liturgical celebration as something worthwhile and enriching. On the basis of numerous living examples of Spanish-speaking migrants in Germany, the following paper develops various points of departure where the pastoral orientation of the church must be in evidence. The starting point, then, is that Christians should approach other people with a basic attitude of appreciative, loving attentiveness. In its concrete form, the liturgy must take each person seriously in their particular circumstances and to seek God from this relationship. So, pastoral care can serve people in a special way by playing a role in the bodily care and needs of people as well as the spiritual. Because personal relationships represent an essential resource, it is an outstanding task for Christian communities to present themselves as relationship and solidarity networks, without at the same time imposing themselves. The conclusion frames a question about those who are responsible for pastoral care: is it clear that the entire people of God is required, with the many 'everyday pastors', to live for the charitable service for others and to give the church a credible face.
