Abstract :
Josèphe indique que Jean-Baptiste fut décapité à Machéronte, palais-forteresse dominant la mer Morte à l’est. On doit le suivre, mais la date de 36 ou 37 qu’il suggère résulte de sa difficulté à hiérarchiser ses sources ; elle doit être largement abaissée.



According to Josephus, John the Baptist was beheaded at Machaerus, a stronghold on the eastern side of the Dead Sea. This can be accepted, but the date he gives (36 or 37) is just the result of his usual difficulty in sorting out inconsistent sources. It should be significantly lowered.
