Abstract :

This article analyses the role and place of the Jewish religion in the historical development of Wissenschaft des Judentums. The author proposes to differentiate between 5 major periods and significant attitudes towards religion in the history of the Wissenschaft: 1. the period of historicization of the Jewish religion, beginning with the Haskhala; 2. the beginnings of the historical and critical approach to rabbinic texts established by Zunz; 3. the theological period, when the Wissenschaft was used as a means to educate modern rabbis (Geiger, Frankel); 4. the period of professionalization and specialization after the inauguration of the Breslau Rabbinerseminar and of the Hochschule für die Wissenschaft des Judentums in Berlin; 5. the pluralistic period, established in new and secular institutions after the end of the first World War, when the Wissenschaft's focus spread beyond rabbinic Judaism and “ethical monotheism" by opening new fields like religious folklore, the sociology of religion or Kabbala.
