Abstract :

This article discusses the role of religion in a securalised society and especially the role of the churches in Europe. Europe is linked not only by its economic and political unity but also by a common tradition and culture, including the religious realm. But to what extent is this still significant to Europeans today? What can the churches contribute to peaceful coexistence in Europe and what is the role here of the ecumenical movement and of the most important ecumenical organisations (such as the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches)? What is the particular contribution of the women in Europe? The author is convinced that we can all make a contribution to Europe’s becoming a peaceful continent and that women have an important share in this; she considers the contribution of the Orthodox Church to be especially important in this respect.
