Abstract :

Indigo was a major input to the domestic Iranian weaving industry. Its use and thus its imports fell when output of the weaving industry dropped. This downward trend was accelerated after 1909 when the use of synthetic indigo increased significantly. The expected end of the use of indigo was prevented by the outbreak of World War I when the German exports stopped. As of 1921 synthetic indigo was imported increasingly large quantities and slowly replaced natural indigo.
