Abstract :
The title of Dilwyn Jones’ comprehensive compilation of nearly 3,800 entries reflects its origin in Margaret Murray’s Index of Names and Titles of the Old Kingdom (1908), to which he modestly acknowledges his indebtedness by referring to it wherever possible, and in large and boldface type. Nor does his work altogether supersede hers, for his objective is not entirely the same. Her aim was to list, and identify by each person’s name, every occurrence of a title that was known to her. She also tabulated sequences of titles where six or more follow each other. A further tabulation was provided to show which, of the entire repertory of titles, each person was known to have. And to this she added a listing of higher and lower ranks of given titles, a list of divinities, and a list of festivals.
