Abstract :

Joseph Kara’s commentary on Isaiah contains over one hundred vernacular glosses. Most are in Old French, although some are in German or a Slavic language, perhaps Old Czech. I have compiled these glosses from MS Lutzki 778 of the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and I present them here along with a discussion of their meaning and importance to the study of French lexicography. I also discuss Kara’s life and work and the graphemic conventions he uses in rendering Old French into the Hebrew script.
