Ewing sarcoma of the left femur in a 13-year-old girl.
A 13-year-old girl presented with a painful mass at the left thigh and enlarged inguinal lymph nodes on both sides. On radiography and magnetic resonance imaging an aggressive bone lesion at the middiaphysis of the left femur with large soft tissue component is found. Because of the age of the patient, the middiaphyseal location of the lesion and the presentation on MRI, the diagnosis of Ewing sarcoma is proposed which is subsequently confirmed on pathological examination of a biopsy specimen. Radiography is still the best method for detection and characterization of bone tumors, while MRI is superior for staging and posttreatment follow up.
