Document Details : Title: The Legend of the Hero Pergamus Author(s): KOSMETATOU, Elizabeth Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 26 Date: 1995 Pages: 133-144 DOI: 10.2143/AS.26.0.632411 Abstract : The legend of Pergamus did not occupy an important position in Greek mythology to judge from the few references to it in ancient literature and from its absence in ancient iconography. But, though a minor hero, Pergamus was featured in the dynastic propaganda of at least two dynasties, the Pyrrhides of Epirus and the Attalids of Pergamon. This paper will review the development of the the myth of Pergamus, its importance in the state propaganda of Epirus and Pergamon, as well as the evidence for this hero’s cult under the Attalids. |
