Abstract :
It is necessary today for women in Eastern Europe to discover more possibilities for themselves. This is particularly true for women in the Lutheran Church of Latvia, which seeks to preserve traditional values, and which in doing so teaches the subordination of the woman. Since the Bible plays a central role in the spirituality of Lutheran congregations, the renewal of the Church can and must be built upon biblical foundations. A shift in identity – that of the first Christians – is also described in the New Testament. The earliest Christians learn to define their identity in a new way, in Christ. In Christ, new possibilities for women become clear, in contrast to their previous roles, as can be seen from the example of the Samaritan woman. It is important that women today can attain their new, liberated identity in dialogue with Jesus.
