Abstract :
Perhaps one of the most surprising discoveries of the author’s research on the socio-economic life of the inhabitants of New Julfa was that the Armenian suburb of Isfahan could be officially called a kingdom, with a king recognized by the Safavids, albeit only for a specific period of time. A leader, or perhaps even two leaders, of New Julfa bore the official title of shah (king), a title the author examines in both its Persian and Armenian forms as found in two primary sources.
