Abstract :

Meetings with the hidden imâm are one of the favorite themes of the hagiographical literature surrounding the twelfth imâm. This article, written as a answer to a wish of Henry Corbin, tries to establish a typology of these narratives. The first section studies the accounts of meetings during the lesser occultation; for the most part they are very restrained, lacking in significant typological features other than those which establish the identity of the community. Written during the period of «confusion» or «perplexity» (Ìayra), when the datas relating to the eschatological Saviour, his occultation and his «representatives» were being established, these texts aim essentially at demonstrating the existence of the son of the eleventh imâm and at proving that he is in fact the expected mahdî. The second section of the article studies the accounts of meetings during the greater occultation, which are both numerous and more varied. Now that the identity of the community has been established, other aspects can be developed in these texts. Three dimensions are identified, according to the principal role played by the hidden imâm in the encounter: the humanitarian dimension, the initiatory dimension and the individual eschatological dimension.
