Abstract :

These last ten years I have focused my research on Old Khmer epigraphy, not only as a mere linguist but also as a student of ancient society. This exercise has proved rewarding on many occasions, whatever the research-subjects I chose to analyse: I just had to take great pains in scrutinizing the vocabulary.
In concentrating on the theme of “god” and “king”, I found out that the identity long established between them by many researchers did not truly hold. The god was in actual facts viewed as “lord of the universe/cosmos”, and the king as “lord of the earth/kingdom”; and the former was the “lord, sovereign” of the latter. In addition, they were teamed up in the leadership of the world, each one responsible for the sphere he managed, in a perfect macro-microcosmic system, thus standing as the main pillars of a dharma- ruled world.
