North lists no less than fifteen personages of Israel's history whom one or other scholar has identified as the figure spoken of in the 'Servant Songs' of Isa 40-55. In reading over North's list one is struck by the non-appearance of one figure who, a a near-contemporary of Deutero-Isaiah and as the object of considerable attention both in various Biblical books of approximately the same date as Isa 40-55 (Kings, Jeremiah, Ezekiel) and in subsequent Jewish tradition, might a priori seem to have a better claim for inclusion than many of the names actually cited, i.e. Judah's last king, Zekekiah. |
