Brown’s study bears his characteristic qualities: careful, nearly encyclopedic review of the literature; judicious use of form and redactional criticism; balanced judgments about the historical background of the gospel materials; and a strong interest in the theological perspectives of the evangelists. This review will focus on only one dimension of Brown’s study, namely his conclusions concerning the special material in Matthew’s passion narrative. While overall Brown tends to submerge his treatment of Matthew’s narrative into that of Mark – referring sometimes to “Mk/Matt” as if one text – he gives considerable specific attention to the issue of the sources underlying Matthew’s special material, at times using this starting point to take issue with what he considers an overly mechanistic application of the two-source theory. |
