Abstract :
The section on the first disciples in chapter 1 of the Gospel of John mentions two disciples of John the Baptist and identifies one of theam as Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. The other remains anonymous, and the exegetical tradition has identified this unnamed disciple with the Beloved Disciple. Recent Johannine studies show a renewed interest in this question, which can have significant implications for the interpretation of the Fourth Gospel.
