Abstract :
Peace processes have become a common feature of the political landscape, national and international, in the closing decades of the 20th century. Where negotiations are successful, the process can lead and in one or two cases has led to a political accommodation. In South Africa in 1994 and in Northern Ireland in 1998 people have been able to sign up to a document which – even if it did not give either side what they wanted, and even led (in some cases) to the abandonment of what at the beginning were regarded as non-negotiable positions – at least enabled people to consider living in disagreement but in dialogue with one another.
