Abstract :

The ideas of universal history, of linear evolution and of predestination, as they traditionally define the Christian vision of history, are usually implicit, but «rarely  expressed» in mediaeval historical works. Byzantine historiography passes from an annalizing chronical of universal history to more personal works, in which the  material is «organized» around a historical hero. Here the providentialist representations proper to the Middle Ages give way to an approach closer to the historical philosophical conceptions of the humanist era.
