Abstract :
The first archaeological field project in Iran of the late Prof. Dr. Louis Vanden Berghe was the prospection of the Marv Dasht plain near Persepolis. It was done on the proposal of André Godard and C.A. Mustafawi, at that time respectively the director-general and the director of the Iranian Archaeological Service, and on the account of the Service. Nevertheless, it was a low budget project which demanded much perseverance on the part of L. Vanden Berghe. He was only accompanied by a Persian guide and all the fieldnotes, drawings and photographs he made himself. It is self-evident that under the circumstances his pioneering excavations could only be meant to provide the first guidelines in the prehistoric research of the area. It must be understood that in Iranian archaeology, the soundings were satisfactory for their day and that the modern high standards of stratigraphic control and data recording, which are now generally expected in field research, could not be attained.
