Abstract :
The paper contains a description of the various types of denotata in our towns that bear or can bear names. Not only streets and squares but also quarters (blocks of residential buildings surrounded by four sweets) and districts, parks, villas, blocks of flats, public buildings, shops and factories. A number of basic problems raised by these various units and to which research might be expected to produce an answer are listed. There follows il presentation of two minor studies that have been undertaken in Copenhagen. Firstly an attempt to collect names from allotment societies, secondly an attempt to find out how 13-14-year-olds look upon the various place-names that surround them in their daily life.
