Abstract :
In het tijdschrift 'Naamkunde' van 2001 heeft Ward van Osta een gedurfde poging ondernomen om de naam Veluwe op een volledig nieuwe manier te interpreteren. Volgens hem hebben we hier te maken met een vorm *Félouwa 'veepoel'. Hier zal worden ingegaan op deze nieuwe interpretatie en zullen ook de argumenten voor lô, louwa 'poel' uit een vroegere studie van de auteur kritisch onder de loep worden genomen.




Vee-Louwe 'cattle pool' and other ponds?
In the periodical 'Naamkunde' of 2001, Ward van Osta made a dared attempt to interpret the toponymic 'Veluwe' in a completely new way; According to this author we are dealing with a form of *Félouwe 'cattle pool'. In this contribution the new interpretation is reviewed and also the arguments for lô, louwa 'muddle pool' from an earlier research of van Osta are critically reconsidered.
